Terje Joranger Ph.D.

Livsreise welcomes back Terje M. Joranger, Ph.D. for his 3rd presentation. He is the director of research at the Norwegian Emigrant Museum in Hedmark County and professor of history at Inland University with campuses throughout east-central Norway.

This presentation will center on his current research about identity formulation among Norwegian immigrants in the Upper Midwest. One study area is Blue Mounds, Wisconsin in Dane County. The other area is the southern and western part of Pope County, Minnesota. Both areas are branded as “Norwegian” today.

Below is the outdoor Immigrant Village at the Norwegian Emigrant Museum. The buildings were dismantled from several states in the Midwest where Norwegians settled in the 19th and early 20th centuries and re-assembled in Norway.
