“April in Voss: Building Hardanger Fiddles and Friendships in Rural Norway”
March 16, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
FreeThis will be a return visit to the Livsreise auditorium by Karen Rebholz. She has an under graduate degree in Art and a PhD. in Biochemistry. Karen first visited the Ole Bull Academiet in Voss in 2016 to take part in a master Class Hardanger International in Norway. She is an accomplished Hardanger fiddle player as well as a having constructed several instruments herself starting in 2012. Last year she was awarded a fellowship from the American-Scandinavian Foundation for “Hardanger Fiddle Construction – Acoustical Adjustments” that enabled her to study with Hardanger fiddle makers Sigvald Rørlien and Wiebke Lüders at Ole Bull Akademiet in Voss, Norway, April 4 to May 5, 2018.
After spending many hundred hours in each instrument’s construction, the result is a visually stunning fiddle. However, getting each fiddle to make the best sound remained a mystery to her. She will tell us about what took place during her month in Norway: experiencing the dedication to the art of fiddle-making, being embedded with more traditional folk musicians and folk dancers, and most importantly what the “TTT” she learned from a friend means and how it applies to her instruments and her music!!
