“The National Bicentennial Commemoration of Norwegian Emigration”
June 3, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
FREEThis event will be held in the Livsreise auditorium. Reservations are not necessary, but seating is limited so arrive early!
2025 will mark the 200th anniversary of the first organized emigration from Norway to North America. The sloop Restauration left Stavanger on July 4 ,1825 with fifty-two souls on board and arrived on October 9 of that year in New York City with fifty-three passengers. (Yes, a baby was born during the perilous voyage!)
The planning for this event was begun several years ago on both sides of the Atlantic and has involved many “stakeholder” organizations in the United States and Norway. The presentation will be about the goals for the commemoration, the organization of the commemoration, and many proposed activities for various events across Norway.
Livsreise is fortunate to have as the speaker for this event, Terje Hasle Joranger, PhD. He is a historian and director of research at the Norwegian Emigrant Museum near Hamar, Norway. His emphasis is on migration and ethnic history from Norway to the United States. He is also the project director of the commemoration activities for the bicentennial year in Norway.
