“HENNING- Carved by hand since 1947” A new short-term exhibit- opening Saturday August 24

Henning Engelsen was born on February 5, 1918, in Sandefjord, Vestfold, Norway.

He had, for many years, shown great talent in fine arts and even had once worked as an illustrator. He later told people it was a coincidence that woodcarving got to his attention. But in 1947 in Rondane, a Nature Reserve in the middle of Norway, Henning carved his first pieces. He began his wood carving career in 1947 in a small workshop in Toten, where he founded the wood carving company HENNING. From the start his idea was to create a world of wood carved figures that radiate joy and humanity and inspire us to rise above the ordinary. During the 1950’s and 1960’s HENNING grew steadily and were soon to be the leading enterprise on the Norwegian souvenir market, exporting figurines all over the world.

At the time Engelsen had twenty-five craftsmen working in his studio. He ran HENNING with great success until 1988. Henning passed away in 2005.Two of his three daughters and his son-in-law are now running the workshop, keeping the production alive. The workshop is still situated in Kapp, in the eastern part of Norway.  His third daughter is the sculptor Elena Engelsen, who is married to a sculptor and graphic artist, Per Ung,
