On Saturday January 30, 2016, University of Wisconsin, Bascom Hill professor Tom DuBois gave a presentation titled, “Telling of Norway: The Stories that Norwegians Use(d) to Shape Their World”
The presentation ventured into 19th century story-telling, rooted in both folk-lore and realism. As our center reflects, this was the period of the widespread immigration to North America. Some stories he told explored the supernatural world while others mulled the concerns of leaving the home-land and its localized culture for the unfamiliarity of America. He also discussed how past traditions can be interpreted in a modern context to act as a real resource for communities in the present.
