Hans Fykerud was born on November 20, 1862 in Sauerrad, Telemark Norway and grew up there. In 1892 he immigrated to the United States and came to Stoughton, Wisconsin. In 1894 he married Aasne Knudsdatter “Lizzie/Elisa” Vesterdahl, who was also born in Telemark County. Hans and his well-known brother Lars, were both accomplished Hardanger fiddle players .
In addition to traditional material from Telemark, he often introduced newly written national romantic programs. The musical style of Hans Fykerud was at a technically advanced level and was highly appreciated by other fiddlers. Hans was also a local businessman, owner of a popular tavern in Stoughton, located not too far from the Stoughton railroad station. We recently received this highly carved fiddle case used by Hans on his concert tours as a gift from his grandson Charles McKinney. There is much more to tell about Hans. Visit Livsreise and find out the “rest of the story” and see the case for yourself!
